The Storchen Zürich is a traditional first class establishment with 67 stylishly elegant rooms and suites in the heart of the old city. Whether at the reception, at the Conciergerie, in the Rôtisserie or on the Terrasse, in the classical Storchen Bar, in our trendy Barchetta, in the Boulevard Café or even in our elegant hotel lobby, our long tradition of hospitality, together with our warm and personal service, can be enjoyed throughout the hotel. It is not known exactly how the hotel got its name «Zum Storchen». Legend has it that the name was adopted after a pair of rare black storks nested on its roof. In 1357 the «Hus zum Storchen» was mentioned in the tax records for the city of Zürich for the first time and just over 100 years later, it was specifically described as an inn. Paracelsus knew it, Grimmelshausen stayed here, Richard Wagner was a guest at the «Storchen»: For more than 650 years, the hospitality of the «Storchen» at the Weinplatz in Zurich has been renowned. The wellknown author John Irving immortalised the «Storchen» in «A Son of the Circus» and «A Widow for One Year». And in the early twentieth century, the industrialist E.G. Bührle transformed it into what it is today. Let us leaf back through a few pages in the wonderful history of the «Storchen».

The largest one can accommodate up to 350 guests. more Shopping Suvretta House is a shopping destination in itself with four exclusive boutiques (Vivaia, Agnona, Ermenegildo Zegna as well as the Sportboutique). The history of the Tschuggen Grand Hotel began in 1883 when Otto Herwig, a German from Hanau on the river Main, came to Arosa to recover from a lung condition. Convinced of the therapeutic effects of Arosa’s air, he soon founded the Berghilf Sanatorium together with his sister Marie, who took over the running of the institution in 1892 and managed it until her death in 1922. For the 1929/1930 winter season the Berghilf Sanatorium for lung patients – most of whom were in residence during the summer months – transformed itself into the Tschuggen Grand Hotel for winter sports enthusiasts. This metamorphosis proved exemplary for the development of tourism as a whole in Arosa. From the refuge for bronchial sufferers and those escaping the heat of the towns and cities, Arosa became the winter and summer sports paradise for which it is famous today, i.e. with fresh-air guaranteed! In the ensuing years the Tschuggen Grand Hotel experienced many ups and downs until the entire premises were laid to waste by fire in 1966. Reconstruction took four years, and a successful re-opening was celebrated in time for the 1970 winter season. In 1980 Armin Wyssmann – for many years the hotel’s owner-director – sold the Tschuggen Grand Hotel to the family of Karl-Heinz Kipp, in whose ownership it remains to this day. A further milestone in the hotel’s history came with the sizeable investments that began in April 2004 under the expert guidance of the internationally renowned Swiss architects Mario Botta and Carlo Rampazzi, featuring the construction of the Tschuggen Bergoase spa facility and the remodelling of the entire infrastructure. The commissioning of the hotel’s very own mountain railway, the Tschuggen Express, is a world premiere. 5000 m² spa and wellness facility spread over four floors, with an impressive water world, an array of saunas and steam baths, treatment rooms, lounge and fire place, fitness area and Medical Wellness. The material used is Duke White granite stone from the Alps, Arosa rock, and Canadian maple. The light sails and connecting bridge are made of glass.
